कुकुर तिहार
Once a year, on the second day of Tihar, Nepal stops to honour its dogs. Pets and street dogs alike get a red tika on the forehead, a garland of marigolds around the neck, and the best food in the house.
हरेक वर्ष तिहारको दोस्रो दिन नेपालले आफ्ना कुकुरलाई सम्मान गर्छ। घरपालुवा र सडकका कुकुर दुवैलाई निधारमा रातो टीका र घाँटीमा सयपत्रीको माला लगाइन्छ, अनि घरको सबैभन्दा मीठो खाना खुवाइन्छ।
What is Kukur Tihar? कुकुर तिहार के हो?
Tihar (also called Deepawali or Yamapanchak) is the five-day festival of lights, held in the month of Kartik (October–November). Each day honours someone different:
- Kag Tihar: crows
- Kukur Tihar: dogs
- Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja: cows, and Laxmi, goddess of wealth
- Goru Tihar / Govardhan Puja: oxen (and Mha Puja for the Newar community)
- Bhai Tika: brothers and sisters
Kukur Tihar falls on Narak Chaturdashi. It is celebrated all over Nepal, and by Nepali communities in Darjeeling, Sikkim and around the world. No other country honours dogs with a day of its national festival.
तिहार (दीपावली वा यमपञ्चक) कात्तिक महिनामा मनाइने पाँच दिने उज्यालोको चाड हो। हरेक दिन फरक जीवलाई सम्मान गरिन्छ:
- काग तिहार: काग
- कुकुर तिहार: कुकुर
- गाई तिहार र लक्ष्मी पूजा: गाई र धनकी देवी लक्ष्मी
- गोरु तिहार / गोवर्धन पूजा: गोरु (नेवार समुदायमा म्हः पूजा)
- भाइटीका: दिदीबहिनी र दाजुभाइ
कुकुर तिहार नरक चतुर्दशीका दिन पर्छ। यो नेपालभरि, दार्जिलिङ, सिक्किम र संसारभरका नेपालीहरूले मनाउँछन्।
Why dogs? किन कुकुर?
In Hindu tradition dogs are the messengers and companions of Yama, the god of death; two dogs guard the gates of his realm. Honouring dogs is also honouring Yama. Dogs are linked to Bhairav, the fierce form of Shiva, whose vehicle is a dog.
The best-loved story is from the Mahabharata. At the end of his life, King Yudhishthira climbed to heaven with a dog that had followed him all the way. When he was told the dog could not enter, he refused to go in without it. The dog was the god Dharma in disguise, and the story has taught loyalty ever since, from the dog to us and from us to the dog.
Above all, Kukur Tihar says thank you to dogs for guarding our homes and streets, and for their friendship.
हिन्दु परम्परामा कुकुरलाई मृत्युका देवता यमराजका दूत र साथी मानिन्छ; उनको लोकको ढोकाको रक्षा दुईवटा कुकुरले गर्छन्। कुकुरको सम्मान यमराजको पनि सम्मान हो। कुकुर शिवको उग्र रूप भैरवको वाहन पनि हो।
महाभारतमा राजा युधिष्ठिर स्वर्ग जाँदा बाटोभरि साथ दिएको कुकुरलाई छोडेर स्वर्ग पस्न मानेनन्। त्यो कुकुर भेष बदलेका धर्मराज थिए। यो कथाले वफादारी सिकाउँछ: कुकुरको हामीप्रति र हाम्रो कुकुरप्रति।
कुकुर तिहारले घर र गल्लीको रक्षा गर्ने र साथ दिने कुकुरलाई धन्यवाद भन्छ।
How dogs are honoured कुकुरलाई कसरी सम्मान गरिन्छ
- Tika: red powder (abir) on the forehead, sometimes with grains of rice.
- Mala: a garland of marigolds (sayapatri) around the neck.
- Food: meat, eggs, milk and treats; for many street dogs, the best meal of the year.
- Respect: people bow, pray and thank dogs, even those with no home.
- टीका: निधारमा रातो अबिर, कहिलेकाहीँ अक्षतासहित।
- माला: घाँटीमा सयपत्रीको माला।
- खाना: मासु, अण्डा, दूध र मीठा परिकार; धेरै सडक कुकुरका लागि वर्षकै सबैभन्दा राम्रो खाना।
- सम्मान: मानिसहरू घर नभएका कुकुरलाई पनि ढोग्छन्, पूजा गर्छन् र धन्यवाद दिन्छन्।
Celebrate kindly दयालु भएर मनाऔं
- Use a little natural red powder; avoid chemical colours, paint and glitter.
- Offer plain food and clean water. Chocolate, and sweets containing xylitol, are poisonous to dogs.
- Approach gently. A frightened dog should not be held down for a tika.
- Take the garland off after the celebration so it doesn’t tangle or get eaten.
- And the next day, and every day after: feed, vaccinate, sterilise, and count every street dog.
- थोरै प्राकृतिक अबिर प्रयोग गर्नुहोस्; रासायनिक रङ, पेन्ट र चमक नलगाउनुहोस्।
- सादा खाना र सफा पानी दिनुहोस्। चकलेट र मिठाइ कुकुरका लागि विषालु हुन सक्छ।
- बिस्तारै नजिक जानुहोस्। डराएको कुकुरलाई टीका लगाउन जबरजस्ती नसमात्नुहोस्।
- पूजापछि माला फुकालिदिनुहोस्, नत्र कुकुरलाई अल्झिन सक्छ वा उसले निल्न सक्छ।
- अनि भोलिदेखि हरेक दिन: खाना, खोप, बन्ध्याकरण, र हरेक सडक कुकुरको गणना।
Every day is Kukur Tihar.
